Concrete

Concrete is a composite material made of coarse aggregate and cement. It is a durable product that can last a very long time. Why maintain concrete if it is naturally a durable product? Choosing to properly maintain concrete can extend not only the life of the product, but its appearance as well. Concrete surfaces are an investment, and by using a few simple tips, you can be sure your concrete lasts longer and looks better.

  • Cleaning – Outdoor concrete surfaces should be cleaned at least once a year. You can find concrete cleaner online or at your local home improvement store. Clean the surfaces by spraying a solution of cleaner and water onto your concrete, letting it sit, and then scrubbing with a stiff bristled brush. Doing so will ensure your concrete always has a shine. Indoor concrete surfaces can be cleaned busing the same process, but replace concrete cleaner with liquid dish soap.
  • Repairing cracks- Cracks in a concrete surface are similar to getting a crack in the windshield. The longer you wait, the harder and more expensive the repair will be. Repairing cracks will minimize the amount of water that intrudes the foundation. It also will eliminate the possibility of weed growth on a driveway or sidewalk.
  • Beware of de-icers- Using de-icer on concrete can damage the integrity of your concrete. The chemicals in de-icer will attack the materials in concrete, allowing it to break down and corrode. Be sure to always use salt or sand as an alternative for slippery, icy surfaces
