What is Playground Sand?

There are many benefits involved with having sand at your community, neighbourhood or school playground, or at a preschool facility. However, it is important that you choose the right kind of sand. Although different kinds can be used, it is best to err on the side of caution and go with a product made specifically for playgrounds. You often see it referred to as playground sand. It differs from other sand in that it has been more carefully screened and washed.

It is important to assure the quality of the playground sand you are using as other types can be dustier when dry, which could be a real problem if the wind kicks up while children are at play. Even with playground sand, it isn’t a bad idea to lightly spray the surface with a bit of water to keep any dust from flying around where it can get into eyes and be inhaled.

In addition to selecting the right sand, to keep your play area safe, proper maintenance is a must. The sand should be installed to a minimum depth of 12 inches when the goal is shock absorbency, such as under a swing or anything that has the potential as a fall zone. You should also inspect it regularly to be sure the 12 inches is still maintained because sand has a way of diminishing over time.
