What Is Recycled Concrete?

Whether you’re a homeowner or a commercial facility manager, you might be paying attention to greener, eco-friendly building trends. We’ve only got one planet, after all, and using recycled materials in construction is a good idea for protecting it. If you’ve heard about recycled concrete and you’re curious about how it fits into the goal for a greener world, read on.

Recycled Concrete

When deconstruction occurs through building demolition, road rerouting, or sidewalk removal, there’s a high chance there will be concrete disposal. Concrete is one of the most popular building materials, so recycling it from demolition projects so it doesn’t end up in a landfill makes perfect, eco-friendly sense. Recycled concrete stays out of the trash and can get a second chance at life in other construction projects.

How It Works

Unfortunately, recycled concrete and new concrete aren’t the same thing. While new concrete can be poured into a new, smooth, surface, recycled concrete doesn’t work the same way. Since it has already been poured once, recycled concrete is already hard and rigid. It must be crushed into small particles before it can be used in new applications. This crushed concrete works well as an aggregate, making it useful in landscaping and as a foundation material, but not in the same applications as new concrete.
