A Quick Guide to Seasonal Gravel Maintenance

Gravel adds functionality and charm to your property, but it does require some TLC to maintain its appeal and effectiveness. Whether you have a gravel driveway, pathway, decorative feature, or parking area, here are a few tips to help you keep the areas in excellent condition throughout the year.

Spring Refresh

Spring is a great time to take care of raking and filling in any low spots. This helps even out displacement that may have occurred over the winter months and allows you to remove debris like leaves and twigs so that you have a smooth, attractive surface. Spring is also a good time to put down pre-emergent herbicides or to manually pull emerging weeds.

Summer Shift

If your gravel surfaces get a lot of traffic during busy summer months, make sure to invest in occasional raking to keep an even surface and prevent compaction or overspreading. The hot summer months may also create dusty conditions, so consider applying a dust control product to keep the dust levels down. Simply watering the surfaces on occasion is often enough to keep the dust at bay.

Fall Preparations

As leaves fall, make a habit of regularly clearing them away from the gravel surface, as they can promote weed growth and impact drainage effectiveness. If there is a chance of heavy snowfall, consider adding a layer of fresh gravel before winter fully sets in, which can help reduce the risk of ice formation and improve traction when the snow does hit.

Winter Survival

Snow removal and erosion control are key in the cooler months of the year. One tip to help you with this is to use a snow shovel, when possible, as a plow can disturb the gravel surface. Also, you should check for signs of erosion or washouts when the snow melts, and immediately apply additional gravel or create barriers to redirect water if you notice issues.

Taking a proactive approach to gravel maintenance can help you get the most out of your investment and keep your gravel surfaces attractive and functional all year long. If you have questions or need assistance with your gravel, don’t hesitate to contact our team for expert advice!
