Types of Gravel and Their Uses

At Flesherton Concrete Products, we have extensive experience in the concrete business. We are thoroughly familiar with the different materials used to create concrete and all their applications. In this article, we will focus on gravel, going over a few of the most widely used varieties and their uses.

  • Pea Gravel – One of the most popular gravel varieties is pea gravel. Pea gravel consists of small, smooth stones ranging from 1/8” to 3/8” in size, and the individual stones come in a variety of colours, including beige, rust, brown, grey, and white. Pea gravel is a popular choice for landscaping, and it is also widely used as an aggregate in concrete.
  • A and B Gravel – Two other gravel options we use frequently are A and B gravel. Both types of gravel are frequently used as concrete aggregates, and the only difference between them is the size of the stones. All stones in A gravel must pass through a 150 mm sieve, so the rocks are no more than 6” in diameter at any point, and all stones in B gravel must pass through a 26.5 mm sieve, so they are about an inch wide.
  • Marble Chips – A third popular type of gravel is marble chips. As the name suggests, this product is made of crushed marble, creating small white stones with reflective flecks. This type of gravel is popular for landscaping because it helps define the edges of flowerbeds, helps with drainage, and also gives the design a decorative touch.
