- What is limestone? – Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock formed from the accumulation of seashells, coral, algae, and other organic debris. These organic structures contain calcium, which is gradually converted into calcite, the primary chemical ingredient of limestone. Limestone is usually found in shallow water in the ocean, but it can also be found in fresh water.
- How is limestone used? – Limestone can be used in a variety of applications. Most limestone is crushed into smaller fragments, which are then used to create road base materials, railroad ballast, concrete aggregates, and much more. It is also used in metal refining, as the chemicals in the stone bond with impurities in the metal, allowing those impurities to be removed as slag. Limestone is also one of the chief ingredients used to create cement—limestone is fired in a kiln along with crushed shale, and the resulting material is then crushed into cement powder. In addition, limestone can be crushed into a fine powder, which is then used in asphalt shingles to make them more weather- and heat-resistant.
